My husband and I were getting a quick bite to eat at a McDonalds one evening while out running errands. A few tables over was a mom with three kids. I could tell they were either homeless or in serious time of need and very hungry. They were asking her if they could have this or that. She was counting coins and digging in every compartment she had in her purse and wallet. She could only scrounge up enough money to give each kid a small hamburger, which totaled about $3 and she was going to go hungry. I felt horrible after looking at the stack of combined fries on our own tray. I knew she wouldn’t take money from us in front of her children. I can understand that type of pride and not wanting to look desperate in front of your children. I conspicuously took out a $20 bill from my wallet. Then when they weren’t paying attention, I tossed it under the next table near theirs. Then I said, “excuse me miss, is that your money? I think you dropped it when you were digging in your wallet.” She picked up it very fast and said, “oh yes, thank you!”. I could tell she was really relieved and surprised. Her oldest kid, a boy about 10-11 began scolding her about losing money like that so I could tell money was no small thing to them. She shrugged her shoulders and smiled at him and then they all went to the counter and ordered a bunch of food! We were getting ready to leave when they came back to their table with their food. She looked at me and mouthed ‘thank you’. I winked at her and then we left.
A clever way to give money to a mom in need
