I was driving home from running errands when one of the guys on the street corner caught my attention. He was an older man and was wearing a Veteran’s hat. I went through my purse and had a $10 and some change. I gave him the change. I got his attention just as the light turned green, he noticed as well so he hurried over so we wouldn’t upset traffic. He had a severe limp and such a sweet face. As our hands touched and he said, “Thank you, God bless you” I was ashamed that I didn’t give him more. I started to drive home and all I could think about was Emma. So I turned around, bought him some Raising Cane’s and went back to the light. For a moment I was the only one at the light so I had the chance to talk to him for a few minutes. I said, “Do you like Raising Cane’s and Dr. Pepper? I grabbed a quick lunch.” He said he liked anything. I asked if he served in Vietnam. He had. He and a comrade were walking through the jungle when the guy behind him stepped on a landmine, he obviously didn’t make it, and this guy had his whole back side blown off. “That’s why I have the limp.” I thanked him for his service and drove off since the light turned green. I wish our Vietnam vets had been treated more like heroes when they came home. #forouremma
